The Essure system is a type of permanent birth control for women. During insertion of the Essure system, your medical provider threads small metal and fiber coils through your vagina and cervix, into your uterus and fallopian tubes. The Essure system blocks the fallopian tubes and causes scar tissue to form around the coils, preventing sperm from reaching the egg. The Essure system doesn’t affect your menstrual cycle.

The Essure system takes three months to become effective in preventing pregnancy. Essure doesn’t offer protection from sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The Essure system isn’t reversible.

You should not have Essure if you’re sensitive to nickel or allergic to the contrast agent used to confirm tubal blockage
