Influenza (Flu) season is upon us. As of October 20, 2018, 427 cases have been reported in Missouri alone. No deaths have been reported, however, last year there were an estimated 80,000 deaths nationwide making that the deadliest flu season in 40 years. Influenza can impact all people, however, those who are very young, old, have a decreased immune system or are pregnant are among the most vulnerable. We want ALL of our patient to get vaccinated. However, if you are pregnant we strongly encourage getting the vaccine. Unfortunately, the vaccine cannot cover 100% of all strains. Therefore, if you are to swab positive for Influenza A or B, there are now TWO (previously only one) treatment options for you! Tamiflu has been used for many years and is taken twice daily for five days. The FDA just approved a new medication for the treatment of influenza called Xofluza. This is a ONE TIME DOSE that you can take orally. As of today, pharmacies do not have this drug stocked, but it is estimated that the drug will be widely available within the next few weeks. The cost if going to average $150 for cash pay patients and if you have insurance or have a coupon card the cost will be $30-90. The side effects reported are upset stomach and bronchitis. If you feel that you may have the flu (fever, chills, cough, runny nose) you need to see your primary care physician or urgent care to get swabbed to see if you can benefit from this new fast acting treatment.
