Mother’s day is more than just celebrating the woman that has been there for you, loving you, supporting you and encouraging you day after day. It is also the kick off for National Women’s Health Week each year.
What a great time to be reminded of the importance of preventive care for women so that our moms are here on this earth with us as long as possible and that those of us that are moms ourselves are here for our children to watch them grow into healthy adults. Here are some simple reminders to stay healthy and live a long happy life with our moms and children:
- Scheduling an annual physical with both your Primary Care Physician as well as the Gynecologist for early detection of health concerns.
- Getting an annual mammogram if over the age of 40 years old. Remember screening mammograms do not require a prescription or an appointment.
- Discussing bone health with your health care provider to determine appropriate supplementation, exercises and potential need for Bone Mineral Density (for postmenopausal women) to help prevent falls and fractures.
- Routine exercise and healthy diet, not only to improve your own health but also to instill healthy eating habits for your children for them to carry throughout their lifetime.
- Getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night and finding healthy ways to reduce stress such as exercise, counseling, meditation, massage and deep breathing techniques.
- Avoid unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking, doing drugs, excessive alcohol, and texting while driving, having multiple sexual partners, not using condoms for STD prevention and not wearing a seatbelt.
If you are due for your annual well woman exam or are having any health issues please contact our office for an appointment. Remember under the Affordable Care Act all preventive health appointments, including a Well Woman Exam are covered at 100% to the patient.
